Flameless Venting

Explosion vents are one of the most economical, practical and convenient solutions to preventing explosions from reaching their potential maximum pressures. However, it is often necessary to locate process equipment indoors, making venting difficult, if not impossible. Through full-scale explosion testing and research, Fike has developed several flameless venting solutions that allow you to safely and economically protect this equipment

Applications

 Meeting explosion safety requirements

Supplier: Fike
Flameless venting is a recently developed technology for protecting indoor equipment from dust explosions. This technology provides a ready solution for some application where conventional explosion venting cant provide the required protection. After describing the flameless venting device and how it works, this acticle explains how to select a device that complies with National Fire Protection Association requirements.

Dust Explosion Protection using Flameless Venting

Supplier: Fike

The risk of industrial explosions has been recognized for several hundred years. Many industries handle materials with the potential for a dust explosion and there are statutory requirements to take both preventative and protective measures to protect personnel and plant equipment. Explosion prevention techniques attempt to minimize or eliminate the occurrence of explosions, whereas explosion protection techniques control the effects of the explosion in such a way as to minimize or eliminate the damage that could occur due to an explosion. Explosion protection techniques include containment, venting, flameless venting, isolation and suppression.

 EPIC™ FQ FLAMELESS VENTING

Code: X.1.25.01-5
Supplier: Fike

Fike Corporation designs simple, reliable explosion protection solutions to meet your safety requirements. During normal venting, an explosion is freely discharged, allowing flames and dust to exit the process vessel being protected. When the process vessel is located indoors, ducts are generally used to safely convey the explosion outside the building. However the cost of implementing such ducts and larger vents due to dramatically decreased venting efficiency limits the practical use of ducts. Fike flame arresters are designed to protect people and equipment from flames and dust, releasing post-combustion gases only. In the event of an explosion, flame and dust will discharge through the open vent into the FQ. The flame from the explosion is extinguished as it travels through the stainless steel mesh, while dust retention screens retain a high percentage of dust particulate.

 EPIC™ FQ-S FLAMELESS VENTING

Code: X.1.34.01-2
Supplier: Fike

The most common basis of safety for protecting industrial processes against the effects of dust explosions is explosion relief venting. Fike’s FQ-S flameless venting technology consists of various layers of high temperature stainless steel which absorb heat produced during the combustion, allowing conventional venting to be done indoors with no release of flame while containing a high percentage of the particulate.
