Novec 1230 Fire Protection Fluid, Frequently Asked Questions.
3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is a clear, colorless and low odor fluid, one of a long line of 3M products designed as a replacement technology for ozone depleting substances (ODSs). Novec 1230 fluid is an effective fire extinguishing agent in standard fire scenarios where halons historically have been used and where halon alternatives are now being used.
3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid has been developed for use as a gaseous, total-flooding extinguishing agent. To understand the ability of Novec1230 fluid to transform from a liquid into a gas upon discharge, some important physical properties need to be understood. For illustration, this brochure compares Novec 1230 fluid to the best known liquid: water.
This Brochure Introduces 3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid. A fire protection fluid created for life. For the life of your people, so that they may be kept safe from fire and chemical hazards. For the life of your equipment, so that it may be effectively protected from fire. And for the life of your system, so that it not only meets today’s regulations but those of the foreseeable future.
For fire protection engineers all over the world, today’s challenge is to make sense of the barrage of complex, and sometimes-contradictory claims being made concerning today’s halon alternatives, and to make a choice that best serves their companies’ – and their stakeholders’ – interests.
Fires involving valuable and critical assets can be hazardous to people, damage property and interfere with the continuity of critical operations and processes. The magnitude of thermal decomposition production resulting from the interaction of a halocarbon agent with a flame front is dependent upon three key factors that influence the time to extinguish. They are the fire size-to-enclosure volume ratio, the agent volumetric concentration, and the discharge time.
3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid was developed as an environmentally responsible extinguishing agent. This total flooding clean agent is the first halogenated halon alternative to address not only the concerns of stratospheric ozone depletion but also those related to climate change (i.e., global warming).
3M™ Novec™ 1230 Fire Protection Fluid is the new generation in clean agent fire suppression. Meets today and tomorrow’s industry concerns for safety, performance, and the environment.

Supplier: Sevo Systems
The actuator for Sevo’s cylinder is permanently mounted directly to the top of the 1230 valve. The electric solenoid valve is normally closed. The mounting brackets are used to securely attach the cylinder to a wall or unistrut frame channel.

The cylinder valves are of a pressure-seated high flow rate design, in order to meet the rapid discharge time specified in NFPA 2001. Each has a brass body, a brass piston with resilient seat, a pressure releasing pilot check, a safety disc assembly, a pressure gauge, and an electric solenoid valve.

The Sevo® 1230 LL-30020 Series Liquid Level Indicator is a simple, manually operated device, which provides means to determine the fluid level in a vertically mounted cylinder. Use of this device allows for the content of fluid to be determined without removing cylinder from its bracketing and piping for weighing.
Code: 16
Supplier: Sevo Systems
The Sevo® 1230 system nozzles are designated to provide rapid and thorough vaporization and distribution of agent with the air in the protected space. Standard nozzles are made of aluminum. Pre-engineered system nozzles are made in three pipe sizes, 1”, 1 ½”, and 2”.

Supplier: Sevo Systems
The pressure switch monitors the pressure within the Sevo® 1230 cylinder should a loss of the nitrogen occur. The pressure switch contacts transfer indicating a problem. The low pressure switch is normally wired into a supervisory circuit to give a trouble signal upon activation.
