North West Rail Link Project

The Sydney Metro NorthWest Rail Link will be a new high-frequency single deck rapid transit train system initially operating between Cudgegong Road and Chatswood.

The Sydney Metro NorthWest Rail Link will enhance travel along the northwest corridor from Cudgegong Road to Epping and beyond to Chatswood – a corridor that serves one of Sydney’s fastest growing areas and one that will be of increasing importance to the city’s future economic development and prosperity.

The first section will comprise the existing Epping to Chatswood Rail Link (ECRL) and a new section will extend from Epping to Cudgegong Road forming a 36km rail line from Chatswood to Cudgegong Road.
The new Cudgegong Road to Epping section is approximately 23km long, comprising eight new railway stations and the development of precincts around them, including three below ground station (Castle Hill, Showground and Norwest); three stations in open cutting (Cherrybrook, Bella Vista and Cudgegong Road); and two elevated stations on the viaduct (Kellyville and Rouse Hill).

The total length of the new rail tunnel from Epping stub tunnels to Bella Vista station is approximately 15.5 km.  Cross passages will be positioned, in between adjacent underground stations, at distances not exceeding 240 metres to link the tunnel bores for the provision of emergency egress.  In addition, there will be two rail crossings between bores at Epping and Castle Hill and new service facilities located at Epping and Cheltenham.

This critical rail infrastructure requires the right fire protection to ensure operational continuity for Australia’s largest city.
Fire Protection Technologies was the selected supplier to protect this critical rail infrastructure with the latest ProInert (2) IG-55 system. The combined reason for our selection was Fire Protection Technologies having the highest combined industry experience of our team and the experience with designing and supplying some of Australia’s largest gaseous suppression systems. The ProInert product also stood out against its competitors with boasting the most international 3rd party approvals (CSIRO, LPCB, UL & FM) for our 300bar storage system.

By the time the project is completed in 2019 a total of 200+ risks will be protected with the ProInert (IG-55) systems ensuring Sydney Rail uses every confidence with their new rail system.
